Watersports

Gartan is running a number of sailing, windsurfing, kayaking and Canadian canoeing courses this year. Based at this superb facility overlooking Gartan Lough, in the heart of Donegal, these courses will visit deserted beaches and rugged coastlines, offshore islands, rivers and lakes.

During the summer months, sailors and windsurfers can avail of our courses and equipment hireat our Downings Beach base, Sheephaven Bay on the north Donegal coast. If you are interested in Instructor/Coach training, please contact the Centre for courses and assessments available.

Kayaking & Canadian Canoeing

These courses allow participants to learn, and develop, the skills required to indulge, with a safe approach, in these exciting adventure sports. Scheduled courses are run throughout the year from basic to more advanced downriver, or whitewater, levels.Beginners start out on Gartan Lough, in our sheltered bay, and venture out to explore this beautiful lake when skills allow.

Whitewater courses make good use of the River Leannan, flowing from Gartan Lough to the sea, and the very many Donegal rivers close by. The Centre is perfectly located for the whitewater paddler.Kayaking and Canadian canoeing courses can also be run for small groups, on dates to suit throughout the year.

Sea Kayaking

Using our fleet of sea kayaks, these courses explore the superb coastline and islands of the northwest. The varied Donegal coastal area is superbly well suited to sea kayaking.Scenic sheltered bays contrast with exposed headlands from Sliabh League to Malin. The islands of Arranmore, Gola, Tory and Inishtrahull have all been visited on previous courses, as have the Causeway Coast, Rathlin Island and Fair Head, to the east.

One day sea kayak courses can be specially arranged for groups of four or more throughout the year. Email or call us

Hills and the Sea

Sea paddling amongst the Donegal islands, and hillwalking on the islands and mainland, should make for an exhilarating and refreshing week. No previous experience of either activity is required, simply a desire to explore and learn new skills. This week is, of course, also suitable for those with previous experience.

Surf kayak courses enjoy the diversity of breaks on our west and north facing Donegal coasts, while developing skills in this thoroughly exhilarating sport.

Waveski and Surf kayak courses enjoy the diversity of breaks on our west and north facing Donegal coasts. Our lessons begin by familiarising you with the surfing environment, equipment and safety before addressing fundamental skills associated with the sport. As you progress coaching will become increasingly individualised to meet your development needs.
