Outdoor Education Centre

Outdoor Education is our core business. Gartan Outdoor Education Centre courses pay particular attention to providing a quality, comfortable and fun learning environment.

We endeavour to ensure that each individual gains experience and achievement within the adventure sport elements of their course, while focussing particularly on personal development.

Staff at Gartan OEC, all highly experienced, qualified and enthusiastic, are particularly good at encouraging each student to greatly benefit from their stay at the Centre. All have received recent, approved, training in Child Protection.

We’ll ensure that awareness, appreciation and care of our wonderful environment are themes that run through all Outdoor Education courses.

All equipment used is appropriate to weather, time of year and activity. Replaced and updated regularly, you’ll be supplied with the best for your safety, comfort and warmth.

Our location is perfect. Not only do we have our own 87 acre Estate, through which we hope eventually to provide some of the fuel for our biomass boiler, we are also next door to Glenveagh National Park, the Donegal Eagle Reintroduction Programme, Glebe Gallery, the wild and wonderful Donegal coastline, rivers, forests and our own Gartan Lough. The Colmcille Heritage Centre, interpreting the life of our local saint, Colmcille, is on our own Estate.

In addition to all of this, the food is great!

Secondary

Most courses take place mid week, with schools from throughout Ireland, and sometimes further afield, travelling to the Centre.

Courses, run on a residential or non residential basis, combine the excitement of a variety of adventure sports with the fun and camaraderie of team building activity. Our very full programmes actively acknowledge the need to care for our environment. You’ll really appreciate why when you see just how beautiful Gartan is.

A good mix of land and water based activity is provided, appropriate to group, weather and time of year.

Primary

Our Outdoor Education courses for Primary level students are designed to be great fun! We really encourage each child to become fully involved (generally a very easy task), and staff are very sensitive to the needs of each and every one.

Again, residential and non residential courses are available, with an excellent mix of activity appropriate to the age group.

Our immediate location is a great environment for learning, personal development and fun for the younger child.

College & Third Level

Gartan OEC provides a variety of courses and services for third level education students and establishments. Courses can be of a general or specialist nature, at any level, whether adventure sport or field study.

We can also provide excellent facilities for your own course programmes.

See or Course Calendar for information on our specialist courses at all levels.

Environmental Field Studies

With the recent opening of the Lough Veagh Boathouse, we are currently working on development of our Field Studies course provision, particularly for Leaving Certificate, Junior Certificate and Primary level students.

You can avail of facilities to run your own programme if you wish.

Youth

Gartan OEC runs a programme of lively courses particularly designed for youth participants, whether individual or within groups.

These courses place particular emphasis on personal development, and also aim to encourage an interest in further pursing involvement in physical activity.

Gartan OEC staff are particularly good at encouraging young people to take responsibility for themselves and their development at this crucial stage in their lives.

Check out our Course Programme for residential and non residential adventure sport courses, (RAH, INRAH and ANRAH) along with our Sailing and Windsurfing School, and our Surf School.

Contact the Centre if you’d like to explore course design ideas for your group.

Adventurer

You’ve been on a school or youth course, here or elsewhere, and you’d like to go further. Click on our Course Programme. Our residential and non residential adventure holidays (RAH, INRAH and ANRAH), Teen Rock, Teen Mountain Week, our ‘Gartan at the Coast’ for sailing, windsurfing and surfing, provide keenly priced encouragement to develop your skills with one of Ireland’s top course providers.

Gartan OEC is very keen to see young people become more actively involved in adventure sports, physical activity generally and care of the environment. Develop an interest in adventure sports and you’re likely to have an interest for life.

So let’s not beat about the bush or the crag here. We at Gartan are good. We’re VERY GOOD in fact, at delivering courses for young people. You’ll learn loads in beautiful and wild places, in good company, and in great comfort.
